laugh. I was probably about 5 or 6 then and just reacted quite emotionally, and then I went on from there. I picked up the violin when I was about 9 or 10. Geller continued his studies at Toronto s Royal Conservatory of Music and almost graduated but his family moved to Detroit just prior to his finishing. Once in Detroit, he decided to pursue the visual arts since he d always enjoyed doodling. Though, he soon progressed past doodling, studying illustration and commerial art at the Meinzinger Art School which eventually landed him work in New York. There, he worked in portraiture for close to 18 years before moving to Sausalito, Calif., where he opened a portrait gallery. But, one day, fate snuck through the postal service. Someone had written me a letter and said, You really belong in Taos. ... I sent a letter to the Chamber of Commerce asking a few questions, Geller grins, addling a little chuckle. I never received a reply. So, I just decided to come out and check it out for myself ... I felt the potential was here. Total Arts originally began as Total Arts Gallery Theater in 1969, as Geller partnered with a friend involved in the performing arts. But, that only lasted a few months and eventually Geller became the sole owner, dropping
