TSV art show helps promote breast cancer awareness

Staff report O ne in eight women will be diagnosed with cancer of the breast dur ing their lifetime* — a tr uly daunting specter. To help whittle this looming morbidity down to size, Taos Ski Valley hosts “Paint for Peaks,” Saturday (March 6), a snowboard and longboard art auction to benefit the Susan G. Komen For The Cure foundation of New Medxico. Saturday has also been designated “Breast Cancer Awareness Day” at Taos Ski Valley.

As to why a ski area would be a willing venue for such an event, TSV Marketing Director Adriana Blake makes it very clear. “One of the things that’s the coolest (about Paint for the Peaks) is that it’s a way to raise money for this great cause by fusing nature — the Ski Valley — and art, two of the main things that are a huge attraction to people coming to Taos.”

A perfect marriage in many ways.

With snowboards donated by Never Summer Industries, and longboards by Dykema Manufacturing and Draven Shoes, the exhibit features original art by local artists such as Thom Wheeler, Chuck Henningsen, Randall LaGro, Jim Vogel, Máye Torres, Gary Fey, Douglas Miles, Art Brewer, Ira Lujan and Anne-Sophie Lenoir, Christina Sporrong, Claire Libin, Kristin Bortles, Wynn Miller, Lindsy Solomon, Read Lockhart, Robin Stanaway, Greg Moon and more, plus a special design by Chrysalis Alternative High School students.

Brain child of Kind Productions owner, Eric Weinrib, the festivities begin at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the base area after the lifts close, when guests will enjoy live outdoor music with the Sorrel-stompin’ beat of DJ Oliver. The exhibit and live and silent auctions of local business’ services, accommodations, and special offerings star ts at 6 p.m. upstairs in the Martini Tree Bar.

Skiing and boarding guests are further encouraged to donate $1 when they buy their lift ticket(s) Saturday.

Weinrib said he has East Coast-participants bids up to more than $1,000 — and this before the first bid has been made. “While it’s great to have all these original works of art on snowboards and everything, the important thing is that we want to raise money for this really valuable cause,” he said.

Sponsors include, Never Summer Industries, Dykema Manufacturing, Draven Shoes, Taos Ski Valley, The Bavarian Lodge and Restaurant, Studio Karina, Kind Productions, The Taos News, The Taos Inn, Brown Rice Internet, Taos Ski Valley Chamber of Commerce, Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort & Spa, Maria Samora, El Monte Sagrado Living Resort & Spa, Taos Pueblo Tourism, Alpine Village Suites, Powderhorn Condos, Amizette Inn, Stray Dog Cantina, Taos Clay, Columbine Inn, Wild Earth Llama Adventures, Snowbear Condos, Hollywood, and many more.
